Favorite Etsy Shops: Modern Prints

I’ve been getting back into modern art and graphic art lately as I search for wall art for my kid’s rooms. I was a graphic design major in college and I kind of overdosed on all things graphic design/illustration and so for awhile I only wanted oil paintings and impressionism but have since turned back to some of the art I found and loved during college.

This is a round up of some of my favorite modern art prints I found while searching the Etsy cosmos. Weirdly I can’t find a lot of abstract original art out there that’s very tasteful. If you’re into creepy over saturated bleeding type mixed media there’s plenty of that. I’ve also noticed that abstract artists tend to obsess over sexual and nude art. I love the human body as much as the next person but that’s not something I want hanging on my wall - that’s just me. To me there’s enough subject matter out there that I don’t feel like I need naked people hanging up. People yes. Naked people. Not so much. Anyway…

The point is I intended to give you a list of shops that sell beautiful original modern and abstract art but it is slim pickings. If you know of any modern/abstract artists that are reasonably affordable please tell me in the comments! Abstract art really lends itself to prints and I have found some really perfect ones in the following shops that will hopefully help you if you want to find something for your house:

1. Hyppesheriff

This shop is kind of a classic, reliable, art-just-right-for-hanging type shop. If you like Matisse, Kandinsky, and Bauhaus this is a really good source for getting a print of some of those old favorites. Some interior designers will say “Never hang museum type -well known art” but I disagree. I say if you like the Mona Lisa then find a place in your house for it. If you like Matisse then hang a Matisse. Mixed in the right way to a room I think they are cool cause they say something about you and done right can be just the right thing.

I love the muted colors on these ones.

2. Blivingstons

We’re getting into the illustration realm here but I think these travel posters are awesome. This shop has A TON of them. I love travel posters. I don’t actually have a single one in my house cause I can’t figure out where to put one but every time I see them I perk up. I pulled a few for your viewing pleasure. *If you go to the shop let me just say that the graphic designer in me is weeping small design tears for their logo. I’m trying to figure out why they used the winking strawberry pulled from a free 90’s clip art download. But their posters are still good. Do not despair.

3. Scandiant

Speaking of travel posters, my little sister turned me on to these graphic maps. They have like 400 cities. I think it’s a really tasteful way to document a place that’s important to you. I’ve seen a few people hang them to document where they served their 2 year mission which I really like.

4. American Posters

American Posters carries a lot of product. I like their color block art the most. These were some of my favorites. They have a bunch of other stuff too.

5. Jazzberry Blue

This shop has a bit more of a retro vibe to it. If you’re drawn to more saturated art this is another good resource with a lot of products. I think their overall aesthetic is kind of fun.
