Sentence Builders Learning
Centers
by Bill Alsdurf Jr.
| Sentence
Builders are self-paced
learning centers designed to build fluency with high-frequency sight
words and introduce sentence structure rules. Students use word cards to
build sentences and then record their work, thus involving decoding,
writing, spelling and context.
Sentence Builder cards are organized into 6 levels, each level having
ten containers. Each container contains word cards that can be put
together to form a sentence. |

Sentence
Builders Dolch Words progress
through six levels. At the first level (Red), students work with
beginning sight words at the pre-primer level. As the students progress
through the levels, words become more and more challenging, working up
to the purple level which contains an assortment of third grade sight
words. Children record their sentences on an answer sheet specific to
their level.

Several current approaches to reading
instruction ask teachers to create “Reading Stations” or activities to
provide practice and reinforcement of skills being presented during small
group instruction. Sentence Builders, because of its self-pacing structure,
fits nicely into any of those programs.
